On May 22, 2018, as part of the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), the S-CAR of George Mason University and the Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) held a workshop for Security Officials and Civil Society Leaders from the Lake Chad Basin on Conflict Resolution Skills. Community Relations and the Fight Against Terrorism, a US State Department project for the Lake Chad Basin sponsored a workshop for visitors from Nigeria, Chad, and Niger. The visitors are invited to the United States under the auspices of the Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program. Their program is arranged by Cultural Vistas. The Department of State outlined the following specific objectives for the project:
Build a cadre of security sector leaders in all three countries that understand the importance of increasing citizen confidence in the legitimacy and effectiveness of justice and security institutions.
Enhance the security leaders’ knowledge of methods that can be used to build relationships between community leaders, security providers, and government institutions.
Support the peaceful resolution of conflict, encourage stability and help mitigate violent extremism, militancy and other forms of instability from manifesting itself in the region.
