The Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution Network (PS&CRN) in collaboration with the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) and its international partners has commenced phase II mapping of peace, security, and conflict resolution education in Nigeria. The activity is a continuation of the “Strengthening Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution in Sub-Saharan African Universities” supported by the United States Institute of Peace (USIP). The project was initiated on the premise that universities play an essential role in training the next generation of policymakers and academics and serve as important pillars of peace in the communities in which they are located. However, many Sub-Saharan African universities struggle to provide quality education as growing student populations stretch available resources. In Nigeria, the progressive proliferation of centers of peace, security, and conflict resolution education since the late 2000s is of interest to the partners.
PS&CRN was established in 2014 with a grant from USIP to contribute to strengthening the institutional and technical capacities of peace studies and conflict resolution in Nigerian universities. The goal of PS&CRN is to foster linkages between centers of peace and conflict studies and serve as a platform for institutional and technical support to the centers. The pioneer centers and institutions that make up the nucleus of PS&CRN membership were inaugurated in 2015 during the first activity phase. Phase II project entails a comprehensive baseline survey of centers of peace and conflict resolution in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, including the center's contacts, profiles, curricula, experiential learning activities, experts, strengths, and weaknesses. The outcomes of the survey will inform the priority technical and institutional assistance needs of the centers.
